WELCOME BACK AND THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO HELP YOUR STUDENT LEARN.
Tests will be given approximately every two weeks on all skills since the previous test. Tests are worth 80% of the grade. Class work and home work is worth 20%. Homework can be defined as taking the class work home, reflect on it and complete unfinished items. This work should be turned in the next day with a parent signature. All work will be collected and filed for review upon request.
Students may re-take any test until the end of the quarter. This may be done as often as desired. However, it must be done before or after school. It may be possible to re-take a test first period with approval of the class room teacher.
September 2:
Reading- The story of Chronos and Oranos will be told. This high interest Greek myth will help introduce the use of prefixes. Chrono of course references to the word time. Students will re-write the story in their own words and then read a printed copy of the same.
Language arts- Students will use the printed copy of the above story to identify words which have a prefix. They will write down the entire word and then the prefix. Students will give the meaning of the base or root word and then describe the effect the prefix has on the root word.
Math- Students will complete a worksheet on basic addition and subtraction.
Geography- Students will begin the map reading skill by practicing location (which is the first geographical theme) using the Cartesian Co-ordinate system. They will locate a number of ordered pairs. This will be followed by creating a system using ordered pairs to identify the location of several fictional countries which they will draw on their system.
September 3:
Reading- The story of Zeus. This high interest Greek myth will help emphasize traditional story telling. Students will be told the story and then they will re-create it in their own words.
Language Arts- Students will use a printed copy of the above story to list words that contain prefixes. Students will write the root word and then identify the suffix. They will define the words and explain what effect the prefix had on the root or base word.
Math- Students will complete a worksheet on basic multiplication.
Geography- Students will use their skills in the Cartesian system to understand the use of latitude and longitude (meridian). They will locate continents, oceans, seas and other geographical features on a map which has a grid.
September 4:
Reading- The story of Athena. The students will be told the story of Athena. They will then be checked with comprehensive questions which have to be answered. Their last task will be to write the story in their own words.
Language Arts- Students will be asked to use a printed copy of the story to list words with attached suffixes. They will write the root word and then the suffix. They will define the entire word and explain the effect the suffix had on the base.
Math- Students will complete a basic division worksheet.
Geography- Using a world map, students will be asked to list all continents, oceans and seas. They will be asked to describe the hemispheres each can be found in.
