Reading (sixth grade):
Monday- Read Zlateh the Goat while listening to the audio.
Standard: 2.4 Read for literary experience in a variety of genres
3.1 Students will learn new information.
Students will read the story while listening to the audio. This will encourage word recognition and pronunciation. When finished with the story, students will read their AR books silently and take tests if ready.
Tuesday- Students will be presented with comprehensive and literal questions.
Standard: 2.1 Student understands the meaning of what is read and will demonstrate evidence of reading comprehension.
Students will be given a comprehensive, literal or inferential question one at a time. They will move to organized into groups. Every group will have a recorder, speaker and monitor. Speakers from each group will share what the other individuals have found. This process will continue until the end of the period. This will be group work.
Wednesday- Students will complete the Apply Your Skills section on page 422.
Standard: 2.4 Students will think critically and analyze style, purpose and literary perspective among more literal questions. Questions 1-11. Students will compare interpret and make connections. The remaining part of the class must be used for AR reading and/or test taking.
Thursday- Students will read an essay on how to cook a food item.
They will create an introductory paragraph with thesis statement.
At least three other supporting paragraphs will be written.
Standard: language 2.3 Students will write for different purposes.
Teacher will discuss elements of the verbal delivery. These will include eye contact, facial expression, gestures, feeling, pitch, rate, tone, volume. These can be found on page 445 of the literature book. This discussion will take place prior to the reading and subsequent writing piece.
Friday- Students will present yesterday’s written piece to the class as an audience.
Standard: language 2.3 Students will write for different purposes.
All students will be given a check off sheet with rubrics for the above criteria. The rubric will be discussed prior to the presentations. Students will then rate each presentation.
Language:
Monday- We will read the last chapter(s) of House on Hackmans Hill.
Standard- Writing 1.5 Publishes text to share with audience.
Students will then divide into groups and collectively produce a document that summarizes the highlight of each chapter. This should be one, or two, sentences for each chapter. The group will appoint a recorder, and monitors. The responses shall be on light colored construction paper. These will be posted on the wall for viewing before the next. Day.
Tuesday- Students will define the following words: Antarctic, adequate, breed, commence, consistently, inaudible, mallard, migratory, quest, tern, attain,
Standard- Read 1.2 Use vocabulary to comprehend text.
Students will be given a dictionary in pairs. They may produce one definition sheet with both names on the document. Each definition should be stated in their own words.
Wednesday- Students will work in groups to create one sentence for each of yesterdays words.
Standard- Read 1.2 Use vocabulary to comprehend text.
Students will then share with the larger audience. The presenter will read the group definition for each word to the rest of the class. The group will of course collectively consider the grammar and conventions for each sentence prior to presentation.
Thursday- Students will define the following words: compensation, despite, destined, jaunt, livelihood, prominence, recipient, recognition and relatively.
Standard Read 1.2 Use vocabulary to comprehend text
Students will be given a dictionary in pairs. They may produce one definition sheet with both names on the document. Each definition should be stated in their own words.
Friday- Students will take a quiz on the words defined this week. (control measure)
Math:
Monday- One target item on the summative assessment was decimal alignment. We will discuss place value for decimals. Students will learn to list decimals in ascending or descending order. Standard- 6.1 number operations for decimals.
After a demonstration and discussion. Students will be each given an index card with a decimal value on it. They will be asked to stand up, and form a line in the room in terms of ascending order.
Students will then be given an integrated review sheet, which includes decimal alignment problems. They will work on the problems and receive help as needed.
Tuesday- The second target item on the summative test was metric measurement. Students will create a prefix list for meters (kilometer, hectometer, etc). The numerical equivalent for each will be listed beside each unit (Ex- kilo=1000). Give examples of metric conversions.
Standard- 6.3 measurement
Students will complete a conversion sheet.
Wednesday- Students will be asked to measure items in metric units. They will use a ruler to measure objects in the room and around the building. These should be objects less than a meter. This will be done in groups. Each group will find ten objects less than a meter and list them with their exact measurement using the largest unit possible first.
Standard- 6.3 measurement.
Upon return to the class, each group will report.
An integrated review sheet will follow.
Thursday- Modified integrated practice. Treat as a quiz. Correct at the end and discuss.
Friday- Video on Metrics.
History: The district has not adopted or purchased a text. Much information comes in the form of auditory information along with certain printed passages.
Monday- Students will listen to a story about Spartan life. They will identify the unique qualities of Spartan life and government.
Standard- 4.2 Understands causal factors which influence history.
Students will capture images presented in the story. They will create a short cartoon strip of five images, which were represented in the story.
Tuesday- Students will be given the rubrics and criteria for the world fair report. We will discuss each item on the list.
Standard- Geog 3.1 Understands location of places around the world.
Students will then be given an informational copy of their particular country. They will read through the material. Each student will be given a file folder. A sketch of the country flag should be placed on the folder along with his or her name.
Wednesday- Students will hear of the initial development of early democratic Greek government. They will be invited to discuss and share ideas. They will be invited to compare to compare to our own form of government.
Standard- 4.2 Understands casual factors which have influenced history.
Students will create a list of key highlights of early Greek democracy.
Thursday- Students will create and color a map for their country. This will be placed in their files. Colored pencils and pens will be provided. Standard 3.1 Cultural characteristics.
The criteria of the world report will be discussed again.
Friday- A video will be shown on one of the selected countries.
Art:
Monday- Students will read Art of the Renaissance on pages 161-165.
Standard 4.4 art, art as a reflection of cultures.
Students will answer six questions on Rennaisance art on page 165.
Tuesday- Students will study the vanishing point and triangular perspectives within the pages read yesterday.
Standard- Art 1.2 develops visual arts skills and techniques.
Students will create their own sample of each of the above techniques given drawing paper.
Wednesday- Still life drawing. Students will work in groups.
Standard Art 1.2 develop visual arts skills and techniques.
Students will select five objects (book, pencil, etc). They will group their desks. They will choose how to arrange the objects on their desk. Each student will draw the series of objects from their own unique perspective or position.
Thursday- Read The Renaissance in the north.
Standard 4.4 Arts influence and reflection of cultures.
Students will answer four questions which refer to the northern Renaissance on page 171.
Friday- Video on a Renaissance artist.
