September 26 - 30, 2011

Reading:
Monday- Read the magazine article "Making It Up As We Go on page 90. Try to determine the difference between story telling today and story telling yesterday. There are 6000 spoken today and only about 78 have a written form that is recorded. Therefore the oral tradition is still important to many cultures. That is the point of today's lesson. Think about the story The Fox and the Crow on Page 54. Read it again and then rewrite it while putting your own spin on it.

Tuesday- Read the story "Priscilla and the Wimps". You will use it to complete a retelling sheet. In step one explain the basic situation. In step two explain the conflict. In step three explain the complications. In step four explain the climax. In step five explain the resolution.

Wednesday- Use the plot structure diagram on page 128 to summarize one of the stories we have read so far. Read pages 128 and 129 in your text. Be prepared to explain what a basic situation is. What are the
complications and what are resolutions.

Thursday- We will watch a short story on video. While you are watching the film, you will create a plot structure diagram for the video.

Friday- Read the story "Just Once" in your text. Take turns reading. Complete questions 1-9 in the Apply Your Skills section on page 149. A quick check will monitor recall. Read with a purpose will ask for projection and extension. The chart will enable the student to retell the story.

Language:
Monday- Today we will explore root words (L9). Choose words which are used properly and use the proper form of the word. We will proof read sentences with transparency 2. These sentences will be corrected for grammatical errors.

Tuesday- Today we will proof read sentences for grammar, apostrophe's etc. We will use proof transparency humor three. We will practice changing the spelling of root words using L10. Remaining time is for SSR

Wednesday- We will proof read sentences for grammatical structure using transparency 4. We will practice using prefixes with L11. Remaining time for SSR.

Thursday- We will proof read for grammatical structure using transparency five. We will address negative prefixes with L12. Remaining time for SSR

Friday- We will proof read for grammatical structure with transparency six. We will consider prefixes with several meanings with L13. Remaining time for SSR.

History Seventh:

Monday- We will read pages 268 - 271. Also read the biography of Lucius Quintius Cincinnatus. Draw a two column table. The column on the left will be labeled Government Arm. The column on the right will be labeled Responsibilities. The title will be Romes Government. The left column should have the entries: consul, Praetor, Senate, Assembly of Centuries. On the right, describe their responsbilities.

Tuesday- Today we will read pages 274- 276. Students will write the words Carthage, Hannibal, Cannae, Scipio and Zama on their paper. Leave space between each for defining the term. I will share the story of the Punic Wars verbally. Students will listen and define each word as they hear them. If there is time, they will share the definitions. They will be encouraged to sketch an animation for each graphic image that comes to their mind.

Wednesday-Students will refer to pages 274 to 276. They will create a graphic organizer (three column paper). The first column will be entitled First Punic War, then The Second Punic War, then the Third Punic War. Students will highlight the details of each under the columns.

Thursday- Review pages read so far while focusing on three people from the past. The people are Cincinnatus, Hannibal and Scipio. Create a three column paper with compares those three in the form of their characteristics and contributions.

Friday- Read pages 278- 283. The focus will be slavery and how it changed Rome. Use a three column paper to compare poverty, corruption and unemployment then and now.

History Sixth:

Monday- Read 26 - 30. Compare the Assyrians and the Chaldeans. Use a two column organizer. List the highlights of each culture. In a paragraph they are then to write which one they believe to be greater and why.

Tuesday- Listen to the story of Gilgamesh. Use a series of rectangles to explain what happened first, next , next, etc.

Wednesday- We will discuss Babylonian mathematics. Students will translate some our numbers into Babylonian.

Thursday- We will investigate Hammurabi's Code. Read 22, 24 and 25. Create a set of your own laws for this school. Fifteen laws.

Friday- Read pages 38 - 41. Discuss aspects of geography of Egypt with instructor. Describe Egyptian geography in at least three paragraphs. Include all important details. Use these pages and the map on 39 as your resource.
