Reading:
Monday-1.3.1 Integrate new vocabulary from literary narrative text
Read “The Game” starting on page 183. Use each of the vocabulary words in a sentence of your own. What does Mr. Reese’s advice show us about him? Who is the narrator of this story and how do you know? Write down the conflict, climax and resolution of the story. Complete the Apply Your Skills section on page 187.
Tuesday- 1.2.2 Applies a variety of strategies to comprehend words and ideas in a text
Read “The Golden Serpent” while listening to the audio. Using a graphic organizer, list the ten to twelve main events in the story in order. This will serve as a summary device. Discuss what the Golden Serpent is and what it means to each of the characters.
Wednesday-
Today will be a test on collection two of the text book. This will take the entire hour. AR books should be brought to class in case students finish early.
Thursday- 2.1.7 Apply comprehension monitoring strategies during and after reading: summarize
Read “Wartime Mistakes/Peacetime Apologies. Students must complete Practicing the Standards” on page 204 including a writing response to the questions “How do you think the survivors of internment reacted to the government’s apology and repayment?”
Friday-
We will write the conflict, climax and resolution for a short story video.
Language:
Monday- 2.4.2 Analyze style of writing, including language choice (figurative)
Today we will write our own short stories using personification. The stories may be fictional but should include at least five personifications within the story. Students will have an opportunity to share their own short story. Half of the class will be spent in SSR and AR work.
Tuesday- 2.4.2 Analyze style of writing, including language choice (figurative)
Today we will write a short story by using alliteration. The story may be fictional but should include at least five examples of alliteration. These will be shared. Half of the class will be spent in SSR and AR work.
Wednesday- 2.4.2 Analyze style of writing, including language choice (figurative)
Today we will write a story which is an exercise in the use of simile. The topic will be Fort Flagler. These will be shared, after interchanging and editing. Half of the class will be used for SSR and AR work.
Thursday- 2.4.2 Analyze style of writing, including language choice (figurative)
Today we will write a story which is an exercise in the use of metaphors. Sample metaphorical pieces will be shown on power point. Students will create one of their own using natural scenes as a topic. These will be shared.
Friday- 2.4.2 Analyze style of writing, including language choice (figurative)
Today we will take a test on the figurative language covered till now.
History (Seventh Grade):
Monday-4.3.1 Analyze and interpret historical materials from a variety of perspectives in ancient history
Read pages 303 to 310. In a short essay, compare the works in literature in ancient Rome to works of literature today. How are they the same? How they different? Think about all the magazines that you like to read today. What are your favorite stories? Do you ever read those gossip magazines on the shelves of the grocery store? Your responses will be shared.
Tuesday- 4.3.1 Analyze and interpret historical materials from a variety of perspectives in ancient history
Today we will read the story of Philemon and Baucis. It is entitled “A Wild Goose Chase”. Students will describe the plot, conflict, climax and resolution in separate paragraphs. Students will use each of the vocabulary words which are highlighted in a sentence of their own. They will respond to each of the questions on page 316.
Wednesday- 4.3.2 Analyze multiple causal factors that shape events in ancient history
Read about the Decline of Rome starting on page 318 and ending on page 326. I will speak on the importance of Christianity with respect to the changing of the Roman dynamic and the very fabric of Roman government. This will include a focus on Constantine. Constantine is highlighted on page 321.
Thursday- Creates and uses research questions to guide inquiry on an historical event
Students are expected to respond to the following questions. They may use their text for evidential support. In fact, their statements should indicate the particular evidence in the text which supports their view. The questions are: 1) How did Christianity change Rome? 2) Why was Constantine such a key figure in the history of Rome? What were his contributions? 3) What occurs after reform fails? (use the graphic organizer on page 318).
Friday-
Today will go either of two ways. Either we will watch a video on the decline of Rome, or students will compare the lifestyles and events in Rome with our own time and country. Answer the following questions: 1) In what ways does our military compare with the Roman military? 2) In what ways are our lifestyles similar? 3) How does religion impact politics and decisions then and now?
History (Sixth Grade):
Monday- 5.4.1 Analyzes multiple factors, compares two groups, generalizes and connects past to present
Today we will read about the early Israelites beginning on page 81 and ending on page 85. The following questions must be written on paper and answered after the reading/discussion: 1) How did the Hebrews obtain their freedom? 2) What are the Ten Commandments? 3) Who were the Judges? 4) How does the Phoenician government compare to our own? 5) What is the promised- land? Your answers must be in complete sentences. We will discuss your findings.
Tuesday- 5.4.1 Analyzes multiple factors, compares two groups, generalizes and connects past to present
We will read about the Kingdom of Israel today. This will start on page 86-92 Students will use each of the highlighted vocabulary words in one sentence. I will verbally compare the Jewish religion with Christianity.
Wednesday- 4.3.2 Analyzes multiple causal factors that shape events in history
Students will answer the following questions using their textbooks: 1) Who is Saul; and what is he known for? 2) Who is David and what is he known for? 3) Who is Solomon; and what is he known for? 4) Who are the prophets? 5) What caused the fall of Israel? 6) What caused the fall of Judah?
Thursday- 5.4.1 analyzes multiple factors, compares two groups, generalizes and connects past to present
Read about the Exile and Return of the Jewish people to Ruth and Naomi on page 99. Answer the following questions: 1) What is in the Hebrew bible? 2) What was the Diaspora? 3) Who were the Maccabees? 4) Describe the Jewish way of life! 5) Describe the Jewish diet and clothing! Make sure your answers are expressed with complete sentences and complete ideas. That may require multiple sentences. For example, when you answer the question about the bible, mention all pertinent ideas like the name Torah, the number of books, what Genesis covers, etc.
Friday-
Today we will either watch a video on Jewish history or use the names and words on page 93 in one sentence each. The graphic organizer on the Maccabees will also be drawn.
