November 21 - 23, 2011

November 21 -23
Reading:2.1.4 Apply comprehension monitoring
strategies before, during, and after
reading: use prior knowledge/schema.
Explain connections between self and
characters and events encountered in
culturally relevant text.
Monday-
Read “Medussa’s Head”. It starts on page 283. Our focus while reading the story today will be characterization. Of course the main character would be Perseus. You will describe three of the characters in the story. List their attributes. List their negatives also as it relates to the story. Define the highlighted terms in your own words.
Tuesday- For learners with diverse needs. Characterization per 2.1.4 (see Monday)
Select a creature from the story: Medusa, all three Gorgons, the three sisters in the cave, the nymphs, or Poseidon’s sea monster. Along the side of a piece of paper list the words from the story that describe the creature. After doing that, draw an image of the creature based on the descriptions from the story. In this way we will see if your drawing reflects the character type. Quad Groups
Wednesday- For the intrapersonal learners. 2.1.5 Read several accounts of the same event
and make inferences about the impact
each would have on the reader (e.g.,
discuss the emotional impact of a journal
entry by a character)
Reflect on Perseus’s feelings upon entering the gorge of Medusa. Do you think he would feel nervous, scared, excited, or angry? Imagine you are Perseus. Write a journal entry from Perseus’s point of view, describing his feelings toward this challenge. Do the same for Poseidon’s sea monster and the three sisters in the cave. Prepare to share your journal entries this period.

Language:
Monday- 2.1.5 Cite passages from text to confirm or
defend predictions and inferences.
You will determine inferences about people today. You will write phrases which describe or indicate a character’s a characters condition or state of being. You will do this by reading several passages. In each passage there is a different set of characters. By answering the questions that follow you will accomplish the job of stating the inference. This is L19P75 in the skill book.
Tuesday-2.1.5 Cite passages from text to confirm or
defend predictions and inferences.

This is an exercise in inferring time and place. You will determine when an action is occurring, and the setting in each of several passages. In doing this you will search for clues within the text of a passage and state the evidence by answering the questions which follow each passage. You will do this using L20P78 in the skill workbook. Do this in quad groups
Wednesday-2.1.5 Cite passages from text to confirm or
defend predictions and inferences.

This will be a review of inference. You will apply some of the same skills in the previous two worksheets after reading a short story on Snake Dance. It is a multiple choice practice assessment. We will consider this to be the first test of the quarter. T1Q2. We will use L21P81.
History (seventh):
Monday- 3.2.2 Explains the spread of Christianity and Islam across Europe and Africa.
We will have a practice assessment today which focuses on the vocabulary and maps. Students will have to match a term with it’s proper definition. This will be taken from the highlighted words in chapter ten. You will also be given a piece of tracing paper. Use it to trace the map (with its details) on page 361. This will be a review of the Rise of Christianity.
Tuesday- 3.2.2 Explains the spread of Christianity and Islam across Europe and Africa.
This will be group quad work. Refer to questions 6 – 11 on page 366. One of you will be the secretary who will write all the responses. Absent people will simply answer the questions. The questions refer to Roman rule of Judea and the meaning of Christianity in Rome. One of your group will be the spokes person that will share the answers of your group.
Wednesday- 3.2.2 Explains the spread of Christianity and Islam across Europe and Africa.
There will be a silent quiz today. Your quizzes will be collected when the quiz time is over and a thanksgiving video will be shown with the remaining time.

History (Sixth):
Monday-1.2.3 Understands a variety of forms of government from the past or present.
I will take the opportunity to finish the battle of Thermopolae and Salamis. You will first copy key words that will be used in the discussion and leave spaces between each. As I speak you will define these words. I will help you. Study these words this evening for a possible quiz.
Tuesday-1.2.3 Understands a variety of forms of government from the past or present.
We will read the text from p134 to 137. Questions will be given after the reading. One question sheet to each quad group. You will work together to find the answers related to the three significant battles of the Persian wars.
Wednesday- quiz on above
There will be a short quiz today on the terms. After the quiz a short Thanksgiving video will be shown.
